Chiang Mai-Chiang Rai Scooter Loop

North Thailand

26-30 December 2023

Amidst Highlands and Borderlands

Chiang Rai is a city about 3.5 hours ride away in the northeast direction from Chiang Mai. It sits even closer to the Mekong river, which is split among Thailand, Myanmar and Laos. Where it’s not the river, the highlands occupy the border with Myanmar, promising stunning sunrise views.

This road trip utilizes the popular and convenient motorbike or scooter, adding to the adventurous spirit that wants to get around like the locals. Fair warning: it will be dangerous on the road with reckless traffic and steep, windy roads, so you must be experienced in order to join this trip!

In the north: The Itinerary

Upon arrival in Chiang Mai, you’ll be warmly greeted by your host. Depending on your arrival time, the day will be left free for you to roam and discover the city’s wonders. We will immerse ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere of the night market while feasting on delicious local delicacies. We’ll then retreat for a restful evening, preparing ourselves for the exciting journey ahead.

We start early to enjoy a delightful breakfast, pick up our motorbikes, and hit the road! Our initial destination is Chiang Rai, approximately a 3.5-hour journey without factoring in pit stops. However, we will definitely take at least one break along the way, perhaps at a charming café. Upon reaching Chiang Rai, we will indulge in a delicious lunch and proceed to check in at our accommodation.

The afternoon will be dedicated to exploring captivating temples, followed by a visit to a vibrant night market to conclude the day.

After breakfast, we set off towards the Golden Triangle, where the Mekong River converges at the meeting point of Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos. Interestingly, we have the opportunity to take a short boat ride to an island located on the Laotian side! Spend the day exploring this captivating area before returning to Chiang Rai for another delightful evening.

Get ready for an exhilarating day of riding as we venture into the mountains! Our journey takes us northward, passing through Mae Salong and reaching Doi Ang Khang. Once there, we will have the opportunity to rent a tent and experience the thrill of sleeping in the wild, awaiting a breathtaking sunrise. Before that, we will embark on scenic hikes and explorations to witness the stunning mountain vistas.

After a breath-taking sunrise view, we begin our way down to return to Chiang Mai, although not without a stop at Nong Uk to taste some delicious Yunnan cuisine for breakfast. We can make an optional stop at Chiang Dao, otherwise we return our motorbikes in Chiang Mai and end the trip.

Group size

This trip accommodates a maximum of 3 motorbikes, with a capacity for 3 riders and 3 passengers in total.

As the host, I will not be able to carry additional passenger for my own convenience.

Minimum age

To rent a motorbike, all riders must be at least 18 years of age or older.

If you plan on bringing an underage passenger to ride pillion (as a passenger), I recommend that they be no younger than 12 years of age. This ensures their safety and ability to handle the experience appropriately.

Experience and safety

While the roads may be paved, it’s important to note that they may not always be in the best condition. Half of the trip includes sections with sharp curves and steep terrain around the mountains.

To participate in this trip (unless you are a passenger), it is recommended that you have some level of riding experience. It is mandatory to wear a helmet at all times during the ride. Additionally, it is essential to strictly adhere to traffic rules and regulations for everyone’s safety.

Bring along warm clothing as it can get cold in the mountains!

Insurance

It is highly recommended to have motorcycle insurance coverage for your bike during the trip. Please ensure that your insurance policy provides adequate coverage for any potential accidents or damages. Do note that if you do not possess a motorcycle license, your insurance will not compensate you.

Payment

A 10% deposit to secure your place is due upon booking confirmation. The remaining amount is due 2 weeks (14 days) prior to the scheduled trip date. For bookings less than 2 weeks prior to departure, 100% of the trip price is payable upon booking confirmation.

We accept payment by credit card only.

If the remaining payment is not received 14 days prior to the scheduled trip date, we reserve the right to cancel your booking and retain your deposit.

Cancellation

Once the trip is confirmed by the host, the following policy applies:

  • If you cancel the booking anytime prior to 30 calendar days in advance of the trip, you are entitled to a full refund minus the deposit;
  • If you cancel the booking 14 to 29 calendar days in advance, you are entitled to a refund of 50% of the total amount paid;
  • For cancellations 0 to 13 days in advance, no refund will be provided.

In the unlikely event that we have to cancel your tour at any given time, you will be informed as soon as possible and be offered the option of rescheduling your tour or receiving a full refund including the deposit.

Meet your Host

Chiang Rai had always been part of my plan before I ultimately opted for the more well-known Mae Hong Son loop. Now that I realize it's not as intimidating as I thought, I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to explore this lesser-known side of Northern Thailand!
